A Polish fish dish is a must on the feasting table for Wigilia. Since meat cannot be eaten for this celebration, jellied fish called ryba w galarecie or Polish fish soup is most often eaten as one among many courses of dishes.

The majority of Poles are Catholics. It’s still common to not eat meat on Fridays. It’s ok to eat fish though, that’s why Friday is a day when you can have the typical Polish fish dish.

Ryba po Grecku is another popular Polish fish dish that is served on Friday for wieczerza wigilijna, but despite its name, has nothing to do with Greece!

For those who are trying to eat healthy, Polish herring in oil or śledzie pod pierzynką are must-eats! They’re perfect for breakfast or even as a meal with toasted rye bread!
