Polish Vegan Lard Spread Recipe – Smalec Wegański

Bread topped with a delightful Polish Vegan lard spread and pickles rests on a patterned plate, accompanied by a small bowl of Smalec Wegański.

Remember those childhood memories of smalec pork lard spread on crusty bread? The taste of tradition, the warmth of home cooking? Now you can relive those moments with a modern twist!

My plant-based smalec is made with simple ingredients: beans, onion, garlic, and apple. It’s so flavorful that you won’t believe it’s not made with pork fat!

Why You’ll This Polish Plant-Based Lard Spread?

It’s healthy.

Made with all-natural ingredients, this vegan smalec is free of cholesterol, trans fats, and artificial additives. It’s a delicious and guilt-free way to enjoy a Polish classic.

It’s delicious.

Spread it on bread, add it to your favorite dishes, or even use it to fry onions for that extra layer of flavor. The possibilities are endless!

It’s cruelty-free.

Enjoy the taste of tradition without harming any animals. This plant-based smalec is 100% vegan and cruelty-free.

How To Make Polish Plant-Based Lard Spread?

Step 1 – Prepare The Beans.

If you are using canned beans, go to step number 2.

A pot filled with cooked white beans sits on a speckled countertop, ready to be transformed into a creamy Smalec Wegański, the beloved Polish Vegan Lard.

Cover the beans with cold water and allow to soak overnight. The next day, change the water and cook until soft.

Mash the beans using the fork. You can also blend them to get a smoother consistency.

Step 2 – Prepare An Onion & Garlic

Peel and dice an onion. Crush the garlic clove. Fry them with oil.

Chopped onions sizzle in a frying pan, filling the kitchen with their savory aroma, as a wooden spoon rests nearby. Add Smalec Wegański for that creamy touch of Polish Vegan Lard, elevating your dish to new heights.

Step 3 – Add An Apple

In the meantime, peel and grate an apple.

In a cozy kitchen, a person grates a peeled apple over a plate using a box grater, preparing to add it to their homemade Polish Vegan Lard Spread.

After 5 minutes of frying, add apple to the onion and fry for another 3 minutes.

Grated apples are expertly incorporated with sautéed onions in a frying pan using a wooden spoon, creating the base for a flavorful Polish-inspired Vegan Lard Spread, or Smalec Wegański.

Step 4 – Mix Everything!

Add fried onion, garlic, and apple to the beans. Season with salt and mix.

Tips For Making Vegan Smalec

Use any kind of white beans

The beans are mashed/ blended so it doesn’t really matter what type you will use. White kidney or cannellini beans will be best.

A bowl of oatmeal with banana pieces on a speckled countertop sits next to a jar of Smalec Wegański, adding a Polish twist to your vegan breakfast.

Blend or mash the beans.

I think mashing is better because you will feel the small chunks of beans when you eat.

It’s ok to blend beans as well. I don’t recommend blending everything (apples, fried onions & garlic). It’s because the original Polish lard always has small chunks of greave or onion inside.
