Pierogi z Truskawkami are delicious Polish dumplings made with strawberries. And you don’t have to wait for summer to make them, you can use frozen fruit too!

Who doesn’t love strawberries? With the season on, I simply can’t stop posting delicious recipes with these fruits! 

Somedays we make strawberry custard sponge cake, some days it’s ryz z truskawkami. Today it’s time for Polish strawberry pierogi recipe, a popular Polish fruit pierogi.

This Polish dish called pierogi are world-famous dumplings and one of the best food to try in Poland. They probably originated in the East, but were introduced to Poland by Saint Jacek Odrowąż or Saint Hyacinth as he’s called.

In fact, pierogi is such an iconic Polish food, that there are many versions of them.

The most famous are pierogi ruskie (made with mashed potatoes and farmer’s cheese). However, you can have pierogi with various different fillings including meat (pierogi z miÄ™sem), cabbage (sauerkraut pierogi or cabbage pierogi), spinach (pierogi ze szpinakiem), cherries (pierogi z wiÅ›niami), and many more.

Tips For Making And Cooking Strawberry Pierogi

Strawberry pierogi are easy to prepare!

Pierogi are VERY EASY to make. However, there are some things that may go wrong, so pay attention to these.

NEVER put strawberry pierogi in cold water.

Pierogi need to be thrown into boiling hot water, otherwise, they will fall apart.

Keep cooked pierogi separated when they are hot.

Don’t keep hot pierogi too close together. Carefully place them on the plate, making sure they are not sticking together, otherwise you won’t be able to separate them afterward.

If you want to keep them in the fridge, wait until they are cold, cover them with melted butter and now they are ready to be placed one above the other.

You can use frozen strawberries as well.

If you don’t have fresh strawberries available, you can use frozen fruits.

You don’t need to defrost them, however, it’s good to coat them with sugar before sealing the strawberries in the pierogi.

This recipe is OK to use for any kind of fruit.

More Tips For Making Strawberry Pierogi

  • If you like, you can mix the strawberries with other fruit to make mixed fruit pierogi.
  • Use a cookie cutter or a pierogi maker to cut the dough in circles.
  • If serving only adults, add a few teaspoons of vodka to the pierogi filling. 
  • While you’re preparing the pierogi, cover the rest with a muslin cloth till you’re ready to cook them.
  • If you want a richer pierogi, add some farmer’s cheese with the strawberries before sealing the pierogi. 
  • Seal the pierogi well, so that they don’t fall apart in the pot.
  • Do not cook too many pierogi at a time or they will stick to each other. 
  • Use a slotted spoon or sieve to gently stir the pierogi.

Is It Possible To Make Strawberry Dumplings Recipe Vegan?

Yes, to make vegan strawberry dumplings; do not add the egg. Egg helps to make the dough stronger but is not an essential part of the pierogi dough.

Also, replace the sour cream with a vegan cream or vegan whipped cream. And replace the butter with vegan butter

Truskawkami is pronounced truhs – cow – kah – mee.

How To Reheat Pierogi?

To reheat pierogi, throw them in a pot of boiling water for a few minutes and they’ll be ready. Or if you like crunchy pierogi, you can fry them with melted butter till they’re golden brown.

Can I Store Strawberry Dumplings In The Fridge Or Freezer?

Yes, wait until the cooked strawberry pierogis have cooled down. Then put them into an airtight container with a layer of melted butter between them so they don’t stick to each other. Store these pierogi in the fridge for up to a week or in the freezer for up to 6 months. Reheat before serving.

If you want to make extra uncooked strawberry pierogi and store them without cooking, you can do this too.
Put the pierogi on a tray in the freezer for a few hours. After they have frozen, you can layer them on top of each other in an airtight container and freeze them for many months.

When you’re want to cook the pierogi, throw them straight into boiling water and cook before serving.

Ingredients

Dough for pierogi with strawberries

  • 5 cups (600g) of all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cups of warm water
  • 2 pinches of salt
  • 4-5 tablespoons of oil

Ingredients For Strawberry Filling

  • 1.5 pounds of strawberries
  • sour cream
  • butter
  • sugar

Instructions

How To Make Dough For Pierogi With Strawberries?

  1. Put flour, egg, oil, and salt into the bowl. Whisk it together with hand or dough hook attachment.
  2. Start adding the water slowly, letting it incorporate before adding more.
  3. Whisk until all the ingredients are incorporated and there are no lumps.

How To Prepare Strawberries For Pierogi?

  1. Wash and hull the strawberries.
  2. If the strawberries are big, cut them into smaller pieces (they should be about 1" long and wide).

How To Mold Pierogi With Strawberries?

  1. Divide the dough into 2 or 3 pieces.
  2. Thinly roll each piece out onto a floured surface to just under 1/16 - 1/8” thickness.
  3. Use a round cookie cutter to cut the circles from the dough.
  4. Put the strawberries in the center of each circle. The more fruits, the better, however, you need to be sure they stay inside pierogi. When the strawberry will get between the dough when sealing, pierogi may fall apart during the cooking.
  5. Pull the edges of each circle together to form pierogi. Make sure the seal is continuous and intact. You can't leave any free space, as pierogi will fall apart during the cooking. Pinch tightly.
  6. Collect the remaining dough scraps and put them to the other 2 dough pieces. Repeat the process until the entire dough and all the strawberries are used.

How To Cook Pierogi With Strawberries?

  1. Pour the water into a big pot. Add 2 pinches of salt. Boil.
  2. Gently throw pierogi, one by one into the boiling water.
  3. When they start floating, wait for a minute and take them out with a slotted spoon.
  4. Pour the melted butter on top. Serve with sour cream and sugar.
