A brown mug with cinnamon sticks and a cinnamon stick, perfect for enjoying a warm cup of Polish mulled wine.

Mulled wine is insanely popular all across Europe during the Christmas season. You will find it in most of the stores and even in the Christmas markets. Each country has its own blend of spices that they use to make mulled wine. Despite the differences in the recipe, the outcome is the same. Mulled wine warms you from the inside out during the cold season. The spices are a reassuring flavor that people associate closely with Christmas.

The most famous Polish mulled wine is also known as grzaniec galicyjski. It is very popular in Poland and can be found in stores across the country. This recipe uses cinnamon, cloves and fruits like apples and oranges.

The Polish mulled wine recipe is remarkably simple to make and its taste is very similar to the ones you get in the market. A big bonus is that you can tweak the flavors slightly so that you make the mulled wine exactly according to your liking.

Mulled wine goes by many other names. The French call the wine ‘vin chaud’. The Swedes on the other hand make a mulled wine that is called ‘glog’. In Romania, the wine is called ‘vin fiert’ while the Croatians call it ‘kuhano vino’. There are many other examples but I won’t go into detail. Suffice to say that the mulled wine is insanely popular, highly coveted and an integral part of the Christmas celebrations.

You can choose to use a pinch of cinnamon powder instead of a cinnamon stick. It is a personal preference based on what you have available.

Mix all the ingredients together.

Part II – Cook The Mixture

Place the mixture on a stove and cook till the mulled wine is hot. It is important not to boil the wine. Mulled wine must be served right after heating. Repeated heating will change the taste of the wine.

FAQs About Polish Mulled Wine

Why Should You Not Boil Polish Mulled Wine?

Boiling Polish mulled wine will change the flavor of the beverage. This is because boiling causes the alcohol to evaporate. The more you boil it, the more you reduce the percentage of alcohol in the mulled wine.

How Do You Serve Polish Mulled Wine?

Traditionally wine is served in long-stemmed glasses. Mulled wine on the other hand isn’t. The best way to serve mulled wine is in a mug. There is an interesting reason for this. Mulled wine is hot. The temperature around is usually cold. If you pour hot wine in the glass, it may crack. Mugs however are more heat resistant. Plus, it is easier to hold the hot beverage in a mug because it has a handle.

Should The Polish Mulled Wine Be Strained?

There are different schools of thought when it comes to this. Not straining the mixture will allow the spices to continue to infuse flavor into the wine. On the other hand, many people do not like it if a stray piece of spice makes it into their drink. I think that at the end of the day to strain or not to strain is a personal choice.
