Polish gyros salad or salatka gyros is one of the popular dishes in Poland. With no known origin, this Polish salad is very much like the Greek gyros but fashioned as a layered dish.

It’s most probably a Polish derivative of the Greek gyros but converted to layers by us Poles. How did the gyros reach Greece? It was brought there by refugees from Anatolia in Asia Minor in the 19th century.

Why Is It Called Gyros?

The gyros is made by slowly cooking meat on a vertically spinning rotiserrie. The name gyros or gyro is derived from the Greek work γύρος which means to circle or turn. This word in turn is borrowed from the Turkish word doner which also means to turn.

While the Greek version of gyros using pork meat is popular, the main ingredient of the Polish gyros salad is the chicken that is traditionally made on a gyros. That’s why it’s sometimes called salatka gyros z kurczakiem.

If not made on a rotating gyro, the poultry meat can be fried in oil with gyros seasoning.

To this, many layers of veggies are added along with ketchup and mayo. Many modern versions of the salad also include rice or pasta to make it a more complete meal. You’ll find different versions of the salad with newer ingredients being added to it.

How To Make The Polish Gyros Salad Recipe

The Polish Gyro Salad is really easy to make at home in less than 20 minutes. You start by washing and dicing the chicken breast. It’s then fried in oil with gyros seasoning.

Next, the washed Chinese cabbage is chopped, an onion is cut into half-moon slices, and bell peppers and pickles are diced. All the ingredients are then layered in a glass salad bowl starting with half of the chopped cabbage and then the fried chicken.
