I’ve been to Greece many times, and in my opinion, ryba po grecku doesn’t even taste like authentic Greek food. After spending some time trying to find out why ryba po grecku is called Polish Greek fish, I haven’t found a clear answer.

It seems like Poles got inspired by Greek fish covered with veggies and they invented their own dish. It’s as simple as that! Keep on reading to get my traditional Polish Greek fish recipe.

Now it’s time to be honest with you- I don’t like Polish Greek fish. The fish is ok but I hate the taste of veggies on top of it. However, the Polish Foodies community is not about me but about YOU. Ryba po grecku is the most popular Polish fish, that’s why I need to share with you the Polish Greek fish recipe.

It was given to me by my mom-in-law who is the best cook I know.

Tips For Making And Serving Polish Greek Fish

Use Any Fish You Want.

You can use any kind of fish fillet you want. The rule is to choose fish that is not oily, for example:

  • pollock
  • sole
  • hake
  • blue grenadier
  • cod

Eat It Warm Or Cold.

Polish Greek fish can be either served warm for a dinner, or cold with a sendvič.

Ryba po grecku is served in Poland all year long, however, it's considered a Christmas Eve dish. As you probably know, Poles don't eat meat the day before Christmas, that's why various kinds of fish are served on wieczerza wigilijna (Christmas Eve supper).

Ingredience

  • 1 lb / ½ kg of raw fish fillets
  • the juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 mrkev
  • 1 kořen petržele
  • 1 kořen celeru
  • 1 pórek (bílá část)
  • 1 cibule
  • 1 tbsp of tomato paste 
  • ¼ cup of water
  • olej
  • black pepper powder
  • sweet red pepper powder (paprika)
  • chilli powder (optional)
  • 2 eggs (optional)
  • all-purpose flour (optional)

Instrukce

  1. Coat the fish fillets with salt, pepper, and lemon juice.
  2. Set aside in the fridge for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight.
  3. After setting it aside, you may either fry the fish on oil right away OR coat it in the beaten eggs and flour, then fry.
  4. Peel the carrot, parsley root, and celery root. Then grate the veggies.
  5. Cut the white part of the leek into rings.
  6. Oloupejte a nakrájejte cibuli.
  7. Fry all the veggies with oil for 3-4 minutes.
  8. Add tomato puree, ¾ tsp of salt, tsp of pepper, 1 tsp of sweet red pepper powder, and some chili.
  9. Add ¼ cup of water, mix, and bring to boil.
  10. Put the veggies onto the fried fish. Serve either warm or cold.
