Kompot is a traditional Polish drink (see my summer kompot recipe). It’s very easy to make: all you need to do are fruits and water. You don’t really have fresh fruits in the wintertime, that’s why cooking standard kompot is not possible during Christmas. That’s why Polish housewives came up with an idea for a very special type of drink- kompot z suszu.

It’s basically a winter version of traditional kompot. The difference is that you use dried fruits instead of fresh ones. Plus, you add some winter spices, such as cinnamon and cloves.

Tips For Cooking Kompot Z Suszu

Don’t Add The Honey To The Hot Drink.

Wait until kompot z suszu is warm to add the honey. Otherwise, it will loose all its healthy benefits.

You Can Replace The Honey With Any Other Sweetener.

Honey is the healthiest option, however, you can add sugar, xylitol, or any other sweetener as well.

Use Any Dried Fruits You Want.

In Poland, you can buy a ready-to-cook mix of dried fruits, right before Christmas. It usually consists of:

Kompot is a traditional Polish drink. It's very easy to make: all you need to do are fruits and water. You don't really have fresh fruits in the wintertime, that's why cooking standard kompot is not possible during Christmas. Cook Time 25 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 lbs (0.5kg) of dried fruits
  • 8-9 cups of water (2 litres)
  • 1-2 tbsps of honey
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 3 cloves

Instructions

  1. Cover the dried fruits with cold water.
  2. Add a cinnamon stick and cloves.
  3. Boil on medium heat for about half an hour.
  4. When kompot z suszu is still warm but not hot, add honey and mix.
  5. Strain the drink- throw away the fruits and spices.
  6. Pour kompot z suszu to the bottle or jug. Keep in the fridge. Serve cold.

Notes

Use any fruits you want:

  • prunes
  • dried apples
  • dried pears
  • dried apricots
  • fresh oranges (no more than 1)
