Food plays a huge part in Polish Easter. On Holy Saturday, Poles put a bit of every Polish Easter food into a basket. That includes:

  • kiełbasa (sausage)
  • horseradish
  • salt
  • pepper

  • babka cake
  • eggs
  • pisanki (painted eggs)
  • many more

Then, they are going to church to bless the food before the official Easter Breakfast.

On Easter morning, the family gathers together to pray and eat a festive meal. Some families are sharing eggs along with good wishes to each other just like they share oplatek for Christmas.

The next day is something all the kids in Poland are waiting for. Wet Monday (Śmigus-Dyngus)! People are throwing water over each other. When the weather is good, the water fights are taking place all over Poland.

It’s not clear why Poles do that but the tradition is a few hundred years old.
